The Core

Entire #10 Planet Core Hello  and welcome, to the end of Project star When we think of the earth's core we think of molten metal thousands of miles beneath the earth's surface. But we really do not know much else about it.  When it comes to the core of our planet, it's  incredibly difficult to research because in order to study it we would have to dig thousands of miles down, and have tools that could withstand both the extreme heat and pressure without breaking. However recently a team at NASA discovered an Asteroid that could potentially help us learn more about our own planet. (image source) This asteroid is named 16 Psyche and is 173 miles wide, 140 miles long and made mostly of metal. Psyche resides within our sun's orbit and floats between Jupitar and Mars which is around 272 million miles away. On a side note, scientists calculated that 16 Psyche has a 5 year long solar orbit with 4 hour long days meaning that there are 10,950 days in one Psyche year. Lastly...

excessive advertising

Entrie#9 excessive advertising Hello and welcome back to project star      When you walk outside chances are you will see a tree, grass, or even a big advertisement telling you to purchase their brand new product. Over the years, many Americans have seen advertisements whether it be on TV or Youtube. Unfortunately, We've begun to see it in school as well.  In Joseph Dreamhouse's blog, Food Insecurity Through Political Cartoons , talks about many topics such as Crops being grown for fuel instead of fuel and government intervention in food, But the topic that caught my eye the most was “ Marketing of Food Products”. In this section, the blog mentions how advertisements have found themselves everywhere like toys and health initiatives. But now they are being advertised to the youths of America by implementing themselves in schools. With companies directing their ads towards children there has been an influx of childhood obesity. The author also states...

The Study of loneliness

Image
Entire  #8 The study of Loneliness Hello and welcome  (Image source) To start off, I need to ask you some questions, are you lonely? Do you feel alone? Did you know that you can be lonely without even feeling it? Well a recent studies have been made by The University of Arizona about the relationship between being lonely and alone The study, lead by Alex Danvers , states that you can be alone without the negative side effect of being lonely. Where the problem lies, is when a person spends approximately 75% of their time alone. The experiment for the results was done by first monitoring two groups of people using a smartphone app called EAR (Electronically Activated Recorder). What this app does is record particip ants' noise every 12 minutes for 30 seconds so it can observe the social behaviors of a person. This being said the group with 66% alone time felt less lonely then the 75% alone time. Makes sense right however, they also deduced that loneliness and aloneness di...

fresh

Entire #7 Fresh foods      Hello and welcome back Throughout our lives we consume many different foods, but the average person never considers where or how our meal appears on our tables. The Film Fresh: Sustainable Food Production in America directed by Ana Sofia Joanes, shines light on this topic while introducing the harmful effects of industrial farming. At the start of the film we are introduced to the phrase “We need to feed the world”. However when companies say this what typically happens is that they are feeding the population using industrialized farms. At first thought this does not sound as if it were a bad thing, but only if you look into it does it reveal itself to be.  (image source) In order to “feed the world” industrialized agricultural companies acquire an abundance of their farming resources. Take cattle as an example. When mass producing beef you need enough cows to do so. In the film Joel Salatin, one of the farmers, elaborates on this proble...

organic robot

Entire # 7 organic robot Hello and and welcome back. The longer we live the more we see the world change around us. Like technological advancement that we would only see in movies. With the future on its way, the line between science fiction and reality becomes unclear. Like the bio computers scientists are creating with rat neurons and stem cells. In order to do this  the way this tech works is by first extraction some cells from a rat brain and having them culture in a glass dish, then they lay the neurons from the lab grown brain on top of a special electrode grid having them form a connection. The grid is used to appeal to the “brain's senses" in a way by sending electrical feedback.  All of this was discussed in Thomas Demarse’s experiment where they had the brain learn to  fly a fighter jet in computer simulation. (image source) Over the years there has been a recurring joke with anything with computing power or a screen. So this being a “computer’” in all, ...

Allstate Mayhem

Entire #5 Mayhem Hello and welcome back to project star.   Have you ever been driving but the car behind you just won't get off your back? Well in todays we will be going over this very event using the  Allstate Mayhem Tailgater :30  ad. In the video Allstate targets drivers with average insurance. The advertisement starts off with its antagonist and narrator Mayhem, who is in a black and white suit and tie but clearly has a cut on his head. In the ad he is portraying an impatient football fan recklessly driving by getting as close to the car ahead of him in an attempt to get the driver ahead to hurry up. (image source) as Mayhem narrates it cuts to the victim ahead who is distracted by his driving. Next he mentions that "you're so busy watching me tailgate that you don't see the one in front of you". After this we see the victims has now hit the blue truck in front of him stopped at a red light. After this Mayhem drives past the crash and tells the audience ...

Element of surprise

Element of surprise  Entrie#4        Hello and welcome back To project star.     In my first entry I briefly mentioned the discovery of a new element, however I did not know that there were 3 newly discovered elements that were added to the periodic table. These elements are Oganesson,  Moscovium and Nihonium. Now when I say "newly" I mean in the past 2 decades which in science terms is brand new. However I still want to share it with you because just in case you find it interesting. (image source)       The first element on the list is the synthetic element Oganesson , Og. The element was formerly known as Ununoctium but Oganesson Is the name of Yuri Oganessian , the nuclear physicist and major player who helped find it. This element has an atomic number of 118 and was discovered in 2006 but was officially recognized as is own element in 2016. Its first time being made was the Joint Institute for Nucl...
