Fresh foods

    Hello and welcome back

Throughout our lives we consume many different foods, but the average person never considers where or how our meal appears on our tables. The Film Fresh: Sustainable Food Production in America directed by Ana Sofia Joanes, shines light on this topic while introducing the harmful effects of industrial farming.

At the start of the film we are introduced to the phrase “We need to feed the world”. However when companies say this what typically happens is that they are feeding the population using industrialized farms. At first thought this does not sound as if it were a bad thing, but only if you look into it does it reveal itself to be.

In order to “feed the world” industrialized agricultural companies acquire an abundance of their farming resources. Take cattle as an example. When mass producing beef you need enough cows to do so. In the film Joel Salatin, one of the farmers, elaborates on this problem by explaining to the audience that in order for big companies to save on feed, a lot of the time they will give the cows dead animals like chickens or other cattle. The issue with this is, cows are herbivores, meaning they specifically eat plants. In the end, the result of this practice has caused cattle to develop Mad cow disease which is not only fatal to cows but humans too. Whereas a regular farm like Mr. Saltanis’, this practice is not in play and the livestock is healthy to the point where they never need any antibiotics unlike industrialized farms where they constantly pump their “products” with them in order to keep them alive. The reason why this matter should concern us is because we are the consumers of these products. Anytime there is another foodborne illness we the people are the collateral damage of unsanitary cheap action of a corporation attempting to save on money.

So I implore you to stay safe and know what you are putting in your body and learn more.
