OSIRIS-REx

Hello and welcome back to Project Star, my name is Dorian Herrera. today we will be diving deeper into a previously mentioned topic; OSIRIS-REx, the spacecraft engineered by scientist at the University of Arizona. The name of the craft is stands for Origin, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security- Regolith Explore. The space craft was launched into space in September 8th of 2016 with the main goal of retrieving a sample and pictures of Bennu, an asteroid near Earth. for this entire i would like to tell you about Its journey and why its important to know.; so ill make this simple and and easier to digest.

For its mission the space craft was meant to harvest pieces of Bennu. Four days after its launch OSIRIS was orbiting the sun, where for it will correct its course other asteroid using its 4 sets of thrusters. Over a year later, on septeber22, 2017: OSIRIS-REx was10,710 miles away from earth and took shoots of Earth and our Moon. During August 2018 the craft took a picture of the asteroid nearly 1.4 million miles away only for the Photos to come back in November of the same year. After a year of mapping out the rocky surface, the team spotted a crater  that was 460 feet wide: the crated was named Nightingale. However, the land sight may have been the most favorable out of all the ranked locations, but the real landing location is only 56 feet wide meaning that it needs top notch accuracy. not only that but there is a apparently a "building-size boulder" in the way. Finally, over 4 years later Osiris rex preformed galactic
snatch and grab of 2 ounces of rocks on October 20-28. Not to long ago (September 24,2023), OSIRIS-REx, traveled to earth from its 2.5 year trip back, and dropped a care package containing the samples from Bennu; this capsule landed in the in the Department of Defense's Utah test and Training range. After its primary mission as complete Osiris changed his name and is leaving Earth again for a new asteroid named Apophis and wont be coming back till 2029. The crafts new name is OSIRIS-APEX (APophis EXplorer).

The reason I wanted to share with you to day is because the researchers main reason for all this work and patience is so that we may have a better idea on how asteroids can impact us in the future. On a less grim side of things, we may get more info on our solar system as well as how early life began; from what researchers hope. All this effort and no ones really heard about this. But hopefully you know now.

That being said, i hope you enjoyed yourself and learned a little more. thank you and have a good day.
