Element of surprise

Element of surprise

 Entrie#4

Hello and welcome back To project star.

In my first entry I briefly mentioned the discovery of a new element, however I did not know that there were 3 newly discovered elements that were added to the periodic table. These elements are Oganesson,  Moscovium and Nihonium. Now when I say "newly" I mean in the past 2 decades which in science terms is brand new. However I still want to share it with you because just in case you find it interesting.

The first element on the list is the synthetic element Oganesson, Og. The element was formerly known as Ununoctium but Oganesson Is the name of Yuri Oganessian, the nuclear physicist and major player who helped find it. This element has an atomic number of 118 and was discovered in 2006 but was officially recognized as is own element in 2016. Its first time being made was the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) collided californium-249 and calcium-294. Unfortunately, there have only been 4 atoms of Og as it is a synthetic element which for starters, does not occur naturally, and is extremely difficult to study because synthetic elements are radioactive which means they rapidly decay.

Next is Moscovium(115), another radioactive, synthetic element. Mc was first found by the J.I.N.R. back in 2003. This element is named after its home Moscow where the JINR is located. Scientists speculate that It may share a few similar chemical properties to bismuth. Just like our previous element, only a few atoms of Moscovium have been made.

The third element on this list is Nihonium (Nh, 113). Element 113’s name Nihonium, means japan and was found by Koshuke Moritas team in Saitama, Japan with RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator Based Science (RNC) back in 2004. Similar to the other Materials on this list, It is highly radioactive and made up of half-lives that rapidly decay in milliseconds. Finally, 12 years after its discovery  it was recognized in 2016 as an element.

I do not know about you but I don't remember ever learning about this in any of my science classes, and I feel it would have been nice to fully grasp the fact we can actually make new elements, not only that but its weird to think that I'm barely older than all the elements listed here. this being said I hope you enjoyed and found this rant a slightly interesting. Thank you for listening and have a good day.
